we were tenants in a house of god

we were tenants in a house of god

A Poem by Daniel Atkinson

it went something like this:
a man from down the stairs
in apartment oh-three-oh
told me the one about the
jewess and the baker
over scotch
and
his wife's biscuits.

they were stale and
it was a stale world, to be sure.

he did the talking and
i did the listening
and
the punchline came and went.
a child.
a tenant.

and i laughed when i was supposed to.
tires crackling over a
gravel drive.

we finished our scotch and biscuits
and as
the world stank of
piss and
dead flies
the man said to me,
"buddy,
i think it's beautiful."

I love everything I read of yours.
"it was a stale word, to be sure"
"tires crackling over a gravel drive"
"the world stank of piss and dead flies"

And yet he still sees the world as beautiful.
This poem is incredibly interesting.
I love it.
Read it three times over :D
