Hiding Inside

Hiding Inside

A Poem by Colie
"

Some people are just hard to read...

"

There is this guy I know

And we are not friends

He is wise beyond his years

But he somehow understands

At times he can be ignorant

And very immature

He is self-conceited

But awesome I am sure.

But if you push that stuff aside

You can discover

What he hides inside

He is sweet

He is caring

And sometimes he can be a treat

He may not have the greatest past

But his future is right on track

You see this guy I know

He hides behind a mask

He shows that he is tough

And don’t get me wrong he is

But there is apart of him

And trust me its not a dead end

But don’t let me fool you

Because he isn’t my friend.

I love the ambiguity here: "There is this guy I know/And we are not friends" And yet the poem goes on to give an analysis of this stranger's(?) character. So indeed you "know" him without being "friends" with him. I'm guessing this poem is describing someone whom you've observed from a distance, and have managed to figure out in spite of the facade he puts up. A very perceptive mind if that's the case. I love the ending lines: "But don’t let me fool you/Because he isn’t my friend." It has a riddle-like coyness to it which leaves the reader in doubt of the whole poem.
