The Mask

The Mask

We all have our Masks...

The Mask
A Poem by Colton Warr

Tell me, if you could,
What can you hide behind your mask?
What treacherous thoughts, what eroding emotion.
I will answer, but only because you ask

I'll tell you, because I can
A divided family, a questionable love
A decision made to leave a perfect girl
An innocent mirage that I cannot get out of

I'll tell you, because I can
New beginnings and abrupt endings
A phantom haunting my heart and soul
My god, where am I heading?

I'll tell you, because I can
Am I the one doing the marooning, or am I being marooned?
Pushing and pulling at my own pleasure
Can't you taste my wound?

I'll tell you, because I can
I love my family, I hate my true love
Or perhaps did I confuse the two?
Can't you tell, I am such the wholesome Dove?

I'll tell you, because I can
Have I gone too far, should I be caged alone?
I deserve to be by myself
Forever destined to aimlessly roam

I'll tell you, because I can
What damnation awaits me, you politely ask
But perhaps it is you that should decide
Am I the one wearing a Mask?

I think it's one of the best thing that I have read today, there are so many read request pending and the word 'mask' always interest me, this I would say it was very different from the way people generally depict mask. This had more inner touch and conflict. Brilliantly written, sir!

I really love the inspiration behind this poem. Masks are a difficult thing to have, and yet sometimes essential. The second line in the four stanza I thought was perfect. That's the point when the mask because so bothersome and treacherous, and you captured the moment when the narrator loses his sense of direction expertly. I also really enjoyed where you talk about confusing family and love. That line really stood out to me as a serious danger of wearing the mask too much. Amazing poem!

a great write indeed - the battles we play out over and over in our minds - we all do it - our mind does not stop - it can't stop - so what better way to keep on going that to drive us mad with wonder if we have trully taken the right direction - ahhhhhh - if we had all the answers we would already be home - very well done my friend XX

I like the ending, I am particular to using endings like these myself....about the poem, your words are so true "forever destined to aimlessly roam" this line sums up the struggle and loss of hope of the subject very well. Can I ask what inspired u to write this?

Fantastic thought provoking piece!
I enjoyed this piece because for many reasons but the question you
choose to end with is killer, so many wearing fake masks today that
even the people wearing them don't recognize that they have them on,
sad but true, brilliant work, thanks for sharing and b-blessed!
