![]() PrologueA Chapter by Jills![]() An introduction to the world, a few characters and an important event.![]() For every being in the world, there is a being in the world that is its opposite, to keep the balance in check. With day also comes night, with the burning heat also comes the frigid cold, and to know happiness, one must also know sadness. But what would it be like to have good in the world without having an evil counterpart? Brol knew this as he nestled away in his cave, high in the mountains far away from the rest of the clan. He hid in the mountains for he enjoyed the solitude it brought.
It wasn’t as if he couldn’t visit them any time he wanted. With just a simple fluid movement from his wings and he was off. He didn’t hide himself away from the rest of his clan because he was unwanted. Dragons were perhaps the wisest creatures the roamed this planet. Yet since he was the eldest and most wise of the clan, he was often sought out for advice by the young ones whom were eager to learn and wanted to learn fast. And so he hid himself in the mountains, so the young ones could learn the ways by themselves. If the truly needed knowledge, he wasn’t so far away that he would be out of reach, but they knew not to disturb him unless it was necessary. Brol let out a disdainful snort as he remembered the last time that there was a visitor to his cave. It was that day which started all the worrisome thinking. A dragon is only known to lay one egg every one-hundred years. So when Sapere, a light blue dragon who was on the smaller side, only standing at about twelve feet tall, the keeper of the hatchlings in the nursery personally visited Brol himself instead of sending someone else in his place, wanting to know what would happen if a dragon were to lay more than one egg at a time what would happen. It was unheard of for a dragon to lay two eggs at once. Not really understanding the situation himself, Brol took flight along with Sapere back to the nursery to try and understand what was happening. The two guards that Sapere left in charge while he went to confront Brol quickly parted when they saw him approaching with the wise old brown dragon himself. He towered over them as he strode past; they shrunk away as his piercing golden eyes roaming over them in acknowledgement. Brol knew that others respected him, but he didn’t know that with that respect also came fear as shown by the two guards. He followed the smaller dragon in through the entrance that he barely fit through due to his enormous size. The last time he was in the nursery was when he himself was just a hatchling. It was not made for dragons of his size, so he would just have to bear it. As they entered the nursery fully, he stopped dead in his tracks. The room had many shelves lining the walls, and resting upon each shelf were up eggs of various colors, some shelves containing only one lone egg while others contain up to five. The eggs resting on the lower shelves have been in the nursery the longest and were closer to their hatching date while the newer additions filled up the higher shelves. Though it was not these eggs that held his attention but what was in the center of the room that caught his attention. Holes in the ceiling let rays of light into the room which were casting down upon the two eggs that were nested directly in the center of the room. If he had known better, he would have thought that they were just two ordinary eggs. There was nothing off about them; their size the same as what any normal egg would be. In his lifetime he had seen some dragons that had multiple heads, but yet he had never heard of a dragon laying two eggs at once. But yet there in front of him laid evidence that contradicted all that he knew. What alerted Brol the most though was the fact that one egg was white as the snow caps on the mountains in which he lived. The other egg was as black as a bottomless pit. Though the eggs came from the same mother, it was if they were complete opposites; like day and night. This thought interested him, and he was very eager to study the two hatchlings once they hatched and started their journey into adulthood. “When were these eggs brought to you?” Brol asked while examining them closely. “They were brought in early this morning by Dilania. She originally planned on keeping them with her, afraid of what the others would think when they found out. They were laid close to thirty night falls ago, but then when she found threats to the eggs’ well being, her plans changed and she brought them here for better care,” Sapere answered as he busied himself with turning the eggs so the heat would be balanced out. Even though being a dragon they were the most feared creature on the planet, they also had enemies that they had to watch out for. These enemies knew that the best way to get rid of a dragon was to attack when they were most vulnerable; which is when they were still inside their eggs and couldn’t defend their selves. So the mothers brought their eggs to the nursery to keep them safe from those who would try to steal the eggs and smash them to prevent there being any more dragons in the world. “I see. And so it shall be close to another two-hundred night falls before they hatch,” he murmured to himself, sketching the sight before him into his memory for future reference. With a nod acknowledging his thanks to Sapere for the information, he exited the nursery and took flight into the skies once more. It had been a little over one hundred night falls since he had visited the nursery and learned about the two eggs. Little else had kept his brain occupied since then. Nightfall was fast approaching as the soft rays from the setting sun swept into the entrance of his cave. Squinting his eyes, he moved forwards towards the entrance and stepped out onto the surrounding ledge. He stood on the ledge looking down at the vast valley before him as the breeze from the wind blew past him. All appeared to be calm as he let his gaze sweep over the valley that he knew so well, where most of the clan resided. Though he couldn’t help but feel a nagging feeling that there was something going on, but what he did not know. Not knowing what caused this feeling made him restless. Deciding to not just stand there and let the feeling of restlessness consume him any longer, he spread his large wings and took flight. Not having a clue where he wanted to go, he just let his wings take him there, and soon he found himself heading in the direction of the nursery. Since it appeared that he was heading in that direction, it couldn’t hurt to stop in and check on the eggs that have kept his mind occupied ever since he laid eyes on them. Touching down upon the ground, he was alerted by the commotion coming from inside of the nursery. The guards which usually stood outside of the entrance way were nowhere in sight, and he could only wonder what happened and where they had gone off to. His question was answered when he spotted the two red dragons bounding out of the entrance at full speed as if they were on a mission. “Good, you’re here Brol, so all we need to do is find Dilania,” the one who reached him first said in a huff. With a nod, the other dragon took off to the skies. “What is going on that you were sent to find Dilania and myself?” he asked as he scrutinized the young dragon. “Well, you see… there was a movement in the nursery today. And upon closer inspection Sapere noticed that the twin eggs were beginning to hatch and he wanted you two to be there when it happens,” he let out in a rush. © 2010 Jills |
