Back to the front

Back to the front

A Poem by Sherratt133
"

About the atrocities of war

"

Young man, awake in hospital bed,
Wounds of war, He'd rather be dead.
Only son went off to war.
Not knowing of what he was fighting for.

Alone in trench,
His gun he clenched,
Death licking at his heels,
Bleeding wound no longer feels.

Back to the front,
Back to the war,
Hit by fire,
Back no more.

Soldier boy sent away,
He masters orders he would obey,
Returns in a wooden box,
Scars and burns in place of wavy locks.

He did as they said,
He ended up dead,
He went out to war.
What was he fighting for?

His girl kept letters he sent, they yearn.
Why won't your leaders ever learn.
Countless lives to be lost.
But they don't care of the cost.

Victim of their propaganda.
Letter began with "Dearest Miranda"
They took her world, her eveything.
No apologies can lessen the sting.

"I'm sorry for your loss"
They couldn't give a toss.
He's gone, Never to return.
But your leaders won't ever learn.

Wow, heartbreaking and done in really tight stanzas. Have you ever read the English WWI poets? They're some of my faves.
