The Fighter

The Fighter

A Poem by Cool Girl
"

This is again, a personal poem...

"
Far away,
In a place,
That I've never been before.

There's a young,
Brave guy,
One that I've met before.

Seventeen,
Is how young,
He is.

Seventeen,
And he's already training,
To be a fighter.

"Don't throw your life away,"
I used to plead.

"You're too young,
It's too dumb."

"Stay with me,
And I'll look up to you."

You knew that it was complicated,
Totally insane,
And dangerous,
But he wanted to save the world.

I know,
That you are far away,
Now,
And you can not hear me.

But I'm the girl,
Who prays every night,
For your safety.

Promise me that when you go,
You'll look up at the stars,
And they will lead you home.

I'm sorry,
For going so quickly,
But it truly wasn't my fault.

You'll be,
In another country,
Soon enough.

And when you wake each morning,
And when you go to sleep,
Watch the yellow star go,
Because I promise we,
Will see the same sun.

If I could prove that I was wrong,
If I could sing you your favorite song,
I would.

I wouldn't argue at all this time,
Wouldn't say that you were waisting your life,
I'd simply say, "Let's sail the seven seas."

Just promise me that when we go,
You will look up at the stars,
And they will lead us home.

And when you wake each morning,
And when you go to sleep,
Watch the yellow star go,
Because I promise we,
Will see the same sun.

Oh yes,
The same sun.

This is a poem that is very personal for me. You can guess who it's about or what it's about. I'll be happy to read your guesses and see what you come up with!

Dedication:

To Jon,
You have always been a fighter:)

You've written an important narrative about a difficult departure. I've watched this same progression with a few of my friends from high school and collage. The social commentary in your poem is outstanding. One of my favorite parts of this piece is your care for your fighter, and your desire for him to come home safely.
My favorite lines were the ones where you talked singing him his favorite song instead of arguing for him to stay home. Wonderful job with this very sensitive subject.

Good poem to start the morning with, really I specially like this stanza:
''And when you wake each morning,
And when you go to sleep,
Watch the yellow star go,
Because I promise we,
Will see the same sun''
