Mask

Mask

A Poem by Michelle Lim
"

Pretense. Facades. So many names, so many identities..what is it that makes us this way?

"
A multi-faceted persona, a deceptive visage,
Worn by countless many, unimaginable numbers,
Losing, sacrificing their personal identity -
A part of themselves, a part of their heart.

Motivation born of fear - fear of rejection,
Fear of getting hurt and disliked for being
who they really are, who they really want to be
Makes them strive to be who they aren't, to hide
Behind their carefully-crafted masks.

Wanting to fit in, to have a place of belonging,
Endless reasons, endless excuses there are
For having and keeping up their masks
Though mostly born out of fear, born out of the past.

The stars wonder, if there would ever be a day
Where they would put their heart outs out to lay
Discarding the deception, the false visage
And reveal themselves inside, wonderfully made.

Author's Note

Michelle Lim
It's my first piece written since a couple of months (first time on this site), though I've actually been writing for years. Not my best work, but I've always wondered about this, and experienced it as well. I found myself wanting to express it, so I chose to write about it.
