I definitely agree that some of them do suck. Just because it sounds nice and is poetic doesn’t make it a good one. I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with coming up with them though. Blah blah blah something about struggling to make sense of our human existence and all that.

Whether simile, metaphor, comparison or other descriptive device shouldn't matter so much as the logical argument of the pronouncement. We don't really know what life is like because we've nothing to compare it to but death which is a determined opposite. Alternate realities notwithstanding we can't compare life but that hasn't stopped the greatest historical minds in literature and art from making the effort and a great many of them are more than worth reading.
