A Poem by Sarah Jane

Will you pull apart my sentences?
Break down my punctuation, pauses?
Will you hunt for my secrets
Between the haphazard stanzas?
Will you discuss my intent
Over small talk and dinner?

Did you need a second opinion
Other than my own?

Would I even tell you the truth
If you asked?

If J the B can't figure this out, I'd better keep shut

Sounds as though someone is suspected of something. The last lines leave us wondering, but sufficient evidence is lacking.

the truth is hard to tell when we have had that bite us in the heart too many times...
I like the references to semantics and I like the discussing of intent over small talk and dinner...i remember times like these...after the initial hurt from a major relationship...small talk was about all that felt safe.

What I read here is someone who has been hurt, possibly betrayed after making herself vulnerable to another. She's asking, probably silently, in her head, if he's a critical jerk who will push and pry his way into her life and unearth the buried secrets, the place where pain hides. The damaged heart/mind says, "No, not so quickly." Still, the narrator is saying she wants him to show a genuine interest in what she says, but at a distance. Good poem and clever title, Sarah Jane.
