Solitude

Solitude

A Poem by Chelsea Schermerhorn

Is it wrong to want it?

Am I just being difficult?

Am I a thorn in people’s shoes

Just because I want solitude?

I need time alone,

Time to think things through.

No one seems to understand;

They think I am a recluse.

It’s not that I’m a misanthrope

Who wants to live alone,

But sometimes I envy them

Believing they live better than I do.

I can’t find time to myself,

So I shut myself up in this room

Wanting to be alone,

Longing for solitude.

It's not wrong to set aside some time for oneself, to take a break from the rest of humanity. Other people don't have that need, and they interpret the rejection (for the moment) of their company as a rejection of them personally. Or else they try even harder to stick around, thinking you need to be comforted because something's wrong.... But, you can't live up to everyone's expectations. If a person requires some privacy for tip-top mental fitness, then so be it.
