I Am Strong (Poem)

A poem about overcoming addiction...

If pain was but a test of weakness

Then I'd realize I am strong

I swam to float above the deepest

Treading nine years long

You've read it before, I've said it twice

You read this poem, I've said it thrice

I'm happy, strong, and moving forward

No longer cocaine dreaming horror

Author's Note

I've been clean off of cocaine and alcohol for 4 months now. I still have to occasional beer, but not to get drunk... It was a very hard battle, chains of bullshit weighing heavy on my mind. But I'm one of the strong ones that will actually do something big in his life, something I and my generations to come can be proud of... I hope someone reading any of my poems about my addiction and my mind's descent will be inspired to find true happiness. Things get better if you let them.
I must warn you, escaping the icy grip of Dark is a lot harder than you'd think, depending on how deep in the hole you've fell.

It's great to know you clawed your way back out of that hole and can experience happiness now, this poem is short but with the author's note it has a lot of depth, the emotions you convey are honest and to the point and you are right if someone (anyone) can take that hope from your poem, it would be a blessing...great write!

i liked your addition of the authors note---the poem was short but to the point- i think you could have delved a bit deeper and put some of your emotion from your authors note into the poem itself, if that makes sense. i enjoyed the line "I swam to float above the deepest, Treading nine years long"--it was your strongest line--nice work!

There are so many people that are going through worse than I have, some less... The feelings involved are nothing that should be felt. Why live like that, why feel those emotions, then numb it just to escape it till you have to feel them again. I admit, they felt/feel comfortable and familiar, but after feeling happiness... It's unparalleled! Thanks for another great review!

I write of addiction a lot, it's icy grip is hard to break and through the darkness we find we are stronger than we ever thought. This speaks to your conviction of remaining strong, happy and moving forward...may your journey continue and your dream of doing something big be realized.
