Mother Earth's Lament

Mother Earth's Lament

A Poem by Aleena

From the moment they landed on me,

I knew they were forever bound to me.

Just couple billion years, I laboured,

nurturing by giving myself piece by piece.

Yet, they reverted to human nature,

They grew insatiable and started stealing,

stealing my treasure, just as it is stolen from a helpless girl.

Hungry, devoid of mercy, grace,

it was my fault, they hit right at the core,

breaking through the boundaries, leaving me exposed,

embarrassed, used, humbled.

I had a dream; thrive,

Instead only wrinkles and bald spots are mine

What do I receive as gratitude?

Indifference, thinking themselves the master of me.

They have conquered my gifts

and turned them as curses towards their brothers.

I pray it is just a rebellious phase.

Where did I go wrong, leading our future astray?

As a resident of an area threatened by rising waters, I could identify with this one.
