Koneko and Tatsu - Brothers till the end

Koneko and Tatsu - Brothers till the end

A Story by DarkChocobo
"

A short story about a boy and a wolf. It's and adaption of me and my best friend, we are like brothers.

"

Koneko always used to be alone and never really made good friends and the ones he had made always used to go their separate ways for all sorts of reasons. One day he walks by the park and sees a lonely wolf sitting by a river looking at his reflection. Out of curiosity Koneko went closer to take a look. He attempts to interact with the wolf by talking to him.  The wolf seems distracted and doesn’t really react to any of it. Koneko goes home looking disappointed as the wolf looks over his shoulder at him.

Two days in a row Koneko walks by the park and sees the wolf sitting there every time and tries to talk to him every time he goes down, each time sitting closer to the wolf and leaves after  talking to him feeling that he won’t give up.

On the third day the boy goes to visit the wolf again, but this time he brought with him some food and a pillow. Koneko laid some meat next to the wolf and a pillow for him to sleep on. The wolf reluctantly eats the meat and pushes the pillow away. Disappointed again Koneko went home but not without hope. As he reached the corner the wolf kept looking at him and as soon as he couldn’t see him anymore he pulled the pillow closer with his mouth and laid his head on it.

The next week went by and by the end of the week the wolf allowed him to sit nearly next to him as he talked to him Koneko even came up a with a nickname for the wolf… Tatsu. It became a weekly routine for the two to spend lots of time together. Tatsu even started to approach Koneko every time he came to visit and eventually started playing with him. They became the bestest friends ever and even regarded each other as brothers at the end.

One day Tatsu stood anxiously at the edge of the river waiting for Koneko to arrive but he didn’t arrive. Tatsu wondered if something bad had happened and started to feel that had he once again been abandoned just like before he met Koneko.  Koneko wasn’t allowed to bring Tatsu home but he did show Tatsu once where he lived. He then made up his mind and left the park and ran to his house in hope that he would find him along the way. As he approached the house he didn’t understand what was going on there were lots of cars, flashing lights and on the side of the road he saw Koneko’s backpack with the food and playthings he would always bring to play with.

Tatsu sniffed around and caught onto Koneko’s scent, it lead him to a big car where he was positioned on a trolley being lifted into the car. Tatsu jumped into the car, the man in the car tried chasing him out, but Koneko’s mother stopped him and said it was alright. The car drove off and Tatsu stayed by Koneko’s side the whole ride and kept him safe while being rushed into a big white building.

After a few hours in a room with beds where Koneko was laying with closed eyes, Tatsu looked at Koneko’s mother as a man with white clothes was talking to her and saw her crying, he tilted his head and looked at Koneko. Tatsu sat and waited, He sat on a chair with his head rested on Koneko’s lap waiting for him to wake up. Weeks went by as Tatsu stayed by his side, licking him on the cheeks every now and then to try and wake him up so that they could go to the river and play like always.  Tatsu also refused to leave when people tried to get him to leave.

The day came that he saw Koneko’s mother in the room and the man with the white clothes, she was crying intensely and they did something to the thing that was connected to Koneko. As Koneko blew out his last breath Tatsu felt a squeeze from Koneko’s hand on his head, as his hand slipped off.

A few minutes later Tatsu felt someone patting his back as if leading him somewhere, he wagged his tail and ran out of the room after something. He ran as fast as he could towards the place he has been waiting to go to for so long. He arrived at the park and marched toward the river and sat there looking into the river.

A few hours later Koneko’s mother drove by the park and saw Tatsu sitting there, as she reached the entrance she slammed the brakes as hard as she could, because for a moment she could have sworn that she saw someone sitting next to him. She ran out of the car towards Tatsu while crying, when she reached him she fell to her knees and held her hand on his head and said “Take good care of him…” and walked away with tears still rolling down her face.

As Tatsu sat there and looked into the distance he lifted up his ear as he heard the voice he loved for so so long saying “Together forever, I’ll stay by your side we are brothers till the end and I’ll never forget you or leave you behind” as he heard that he felt the hugging arms he became so used to feeling... embracing him once again.
