Summary: Set in S5. Here's another version, where Kat's The Dark One, because of willingly taking the darkness within herself. Can Rumple save her, or will her past have to save her? When she dies, will she be saved from Hades? Does she want to be saved?

It was a dismal night in Storybrooke, as Dark Katherine hung around in the tunnels. These tunnels were her home. After all, darkness thrived in dark places. Plus, she needed a place that was private. She couldn't be anywhere the others would find her. She had a plan in motion, just as she had when she'd been a vampire. The darkness within wanted to get rid of the Light, but she was fighting not to. The Dark One or not, she still had good inside her. The visual of Neume constantly tried to get her to do what it wanted, but Katherine was fighting, because of knowing what Nadia would think of her if she was still alive. That, and because she just wanted to do what was right. She wouldn't disgrace Nadia and betray her present love, Rumple, so the darkness could get what it wished. She was so much better than that. No. Her only plan was to help Hook. Preferably, without him finding out that she'd turned him into The Dark One, too. She knew he'd hate her for it, no matter what. She hadn't wanted him to die, though. The apprentice had said that the darkness needed to be put in something that could hold its power. She knew it didn't have to be a person. Plus, the excalibur had the power of The Dark One dagger. It could hold it. She knew there'd be a price, though. Once it was in the sword, someone would have to get killed by it. She knew with her new powers, she could even put it inside an indestructible Original, but she wouldn't do that to Elijah or Klaus or even Rebekah. She had a better plan. She could put it in either the excalibur and kill herself to get rid of the darkness for good, or she could put it inside someone she knew from her world. She didn't want to put the darkness in someone that she knew in Storybrooke. Elena was someone she could put the darkness in, since Katherine didn't really care about what happened to her, but she had to use someone that could handle the darkness, as well as be at least somewhat indestructible. At that thought, she knew it had to be someone that didn't have a habit of getting in life and death situations. That's when she thought of someone that she hadn't seen in several centuries.

Katherine magically looked for her old-time friend, a little differently than Regina's magical way of finding others, when she wanted or needed them. It didn't take long for Katherine to find out where Enzo was at. He was in Mystic Falls, which kind of surprised her, since he didn't usually like small towns. After he'd been abandoned by Lily, she'd met him and had taught him everything he knew about being a vampire. She and Enzo were a lot alike. They both usually didn't like small towns. Her vampire self found small towns as boring.

Shortly after finding where Enzo was, she did a spell that would bring him to town. Then she left the tunnels to go find him.

About half an hour later, Katherine found Enzo.

"Hello, old friend," Katherine greeted, standing behind him in the street.

Enzo heard her voice and turned around to see her.

"Kitty Kat. Long time, luv." Seeing her new appearance, since he hadn't been around when she'd gotten turned back into a human, he had to comment to her, saying, "You've changed." Then he added, "What am I doing here?"

"I need your help with something. This town is filled with magic and fairytales. I'm different from the last time you saw me. I don't want to put anyone's lives at risk by putting the darkness inside someone else. If I do that, then it'll have to be destroyed by killing someone. I don't want to do that, but I need to get rid of the darkness forever. It needs to be someone not human that can handle the darkness, and can leave town. If you let me put the darkness in you and then you leave town, that should destroy the darkness. It's made of magic. Most magic that leaves this town become nonexistent. And, even if it stays with you, you've had a lot of darkness in your life, and you're very resourceful. But I have someone now, and if I stay as The Dark One, as the fairytale people call it when you're filled with the darkness, I'm eventually, not going to be able to resist the temptations. I've done a lot of good since coming to this town. I don't want to ruin it now by becoming who I used to be. So, what do you say? Will you let me do this? Will you help me?"

After everything that he'd been through with her, through thick and thin, through love and danger, and even running with her until she didn't want him to be running from Klaus with her, she didn't have to ask him twice. She'd never asked him to do anything for her, but now she was asking. He was one of her only true friends left alive. Of course, he'd help her. He owed her everything, even though she'd never asked him to pay her back. She'd taught him everything, when Lily wasn't there to teach him to be a vampire.

"Of course, Kitty Kat. And I must say, even changed, you're quite a genius. You know, I'd do anything you ask, gorgeous," he replied.

"Then, let's get to the tunnels," she replied, before teleporting them both to where she was living in the tunnels.

She walked over to a table that the excalibur sword was on. A while back, she'd gotten someone to pull it out of the stone, and then had made it whole again. And she'd learned how to use it for when she was ready to do so.

She picked the sword up and summoned all of the darkness into it. It made both the darkness inside herself and Hook, go inside the sword. Then she sent the darkness into Enzo. And so, her plan succeeded, and Enzo left town.

Now that the darkness was out of herself and Hook, she left the tunnels and went to Rumple's shop. With the darkness gone, excalibur was useless. Also, there was no more need for any Dark Ones to exist. That meant that she was no longer The Dark One, and neither was Hook. Rumple was free from it, too. She knew that was good. Not just because darkness brought chaos, but because she knew that all his evil deeds had nearly killed him. She was lucky that he was going to be okay. She'd lost Nadia, her only daughter and child, as well as her mother. She couldn't lose anyone else. There was only so much pain that someone could take, and she was nearly out of the amount she could take. She'd lost too many in her 538 years as a vampire, as well as Nadia's death that had happened before Kat had died. She didn't want to lose anyone else. She couldn't. If anyone else died that she cared about, she didn't think she could get through it.

About twenty minutes later, she entered the shop. Now that she wasn't The Dark One anymore, she was back to her human look, before she'd become The Dark One to save Regina from the darkness. She wanted to see Rumple first, before she looked for the others. The others could sometimes be tricky, when it came to being a hero after being a villain for a while. But Rumple understood. He always did. She and Rumple were way too much alike.

When she entered, she saw Rumple behind the glass case counter, as usual.

She walked up to him, as he looked at her.

"Come to your senses, dearie?" he inquired.

She knew what he meant. He'd done what he could to try and convince her to let him help her, but she'd been too stubborn to let him help her defeat the darkness.

"Not exactly. I got rid of it. I have an old friend from my world. I asked him to take it all into himself and then leave town, so he did," she informed him. "Enzo's very resourceful and stronger than I am when it comes to anything related to darkness. He'll get through it." She then had to ask him, "How's your heart?"

He was a little surprised that she'd been able to get rid of the darkness so soon, but was also impressed with her being able to figure out how to do so in such a short time. She was more resourceful than himself, and he'd been fighting it for several hundreds of years, while trying to figure out a way to get rid of it. Where was she when he needed help all those years ago? But then again, he assumed that she'd been a much different person as a vampire. When she'd said that she'd been all the bad parts of a vampire, he assumed it meant that she let the darkest parts of herself have free rein.

"Good as new," he replied to her question.

"Good," she replied. She then gave a smile. After all, he wouldn't be dying anytime soon.

After she'd found everyone else and had informed them of what she'd done, they were happy to have her back, although it took a while with some, for a few of them to trust her again. Especially, when she returned everyone's memories, and they'd all found out about what she'd done to Hook. They all eventually forgave her, though. Even Hook, after a while.

Several months later, after the town had had peace for quite a while, and Kat and Rumple had had their happy ending, as it usually happened, the peace did not continue. Enzo came back to town for Kat's help, not being able to handle the darkness much longer. When he'd left town, the darkness hadn't disintegrated like Kat had hoped it would do. Instead, it had stayed with him. He hadn't wanted to deal with Bonnie though, since she wasn't a fan of him, so he'd gone to town for Kat's help.

After Enzo came to her that night, she knew that her plan had failed, which wasn't a common occurrence for her. She knew what she had to do. She didn't know where she'd end up at, when she put the darkness inside herself again and killed herself, but she hoped she'd have peace. She'd fought so long and so hard to have her happiness, and to escape Klaus. She'd succeeded in both of those, and now there really wasn't much else for her to do. Besides, she knew that if she ended up some place else, she now had people that would come to her rescue, if she needed it. And so, she did just that, despite Rumple trying to persuade her to try and find a different plan of action. So, by the river, she killed herself.

When Katherine Pierce woke up, she found herself in what looked like a cave. Looking around, she saw in the darkness of the cave, something that she recognized from when she used to be fascinated with Greek mythology. She saw a three-headed dog, she knew was a guard dog. She knew that where there was the three-headed dog, there was the underworld. And where there was the underworld, there was Hades, God of the underworld. She knew from Greek mythology how vicious both Hades and his guard dog, Cerberus were, so she didn't dare try escaping. She knew there wasn't a point in it. She could only wait for Rumple to come to the rescue. And she knew it would be easy for him, since Rumple had once been here. When she'd first come to town, she'd learned everything about the town, as well as the past events that had happened, so she knew that Rumple had sacrificed himself, but had been brought back to life by Zelena.

As she sat there, she began to think of a plan, just in case Rumple didn't get to the underworld anytime soon. She wouldn't let Hades break her. She assumed that that's what he had in store for her. She assumed the reason for her in the cave and Cerberus guarding the entrance, meant that Hades was probably testing her to see what she would do. She wasn't going to give him any satisfaction, though. She didn't know where Hades was, but she knew from Greek mythology that Hades knew when souls came to the underworld, as well as when souls left the underworld. She was tough, though. She wouldn't let him do whatever the hell he wanted with her. He was going to lose, because she wasn't going to let him win, no matter what the price. All she had to do was to fight him long enough for Rumple to get to the underworld and save her. If she had to, she'd temporarily put Cerberus to sleep and get out of this cave. She knew one person here that had the ability to help her. At least, until Rumple could take the trip here. She'd never met her, but she knew her story. She knew that she'd done terrible things, which she'd passed down to Regina, but so had Katherine. And just like most people, she'd do whatever it took to protect herself and help others.

Although, at first, Katherine hadn't wanted to leave due to not wanting to play any games Hades might be playing, she decided that it was better not to be alone in this. Besides, two people with magic could accomplish many things, she knew. Even if they'd never met before. She was much better company than having to fight by herself. Two people with a common enemy could accomplish great things, after all. And Katherine wasn't one to give up, even though, there were times that she'd wanted to, when she'd been a vampire and human alike, back in her world. Especially, when she'd been left alone, and had been a frightened human, not knowing if an enemy would be around the next corner. She'd survived, though. And even in the underworld, with Hades running everything, she wasn't going to give up. She hadn't sacrificed herself to destroy the darkness for nothing.

She got to her feet, and approached Cerberus.

"Come on, mutt. Come and get me."

When it was going to attack, she did a spell that knocked it out. Then she went around it, and amazingly, was able to leave the cave without running into anything or anyone else.

When she saw what resembled Regina's office in the real world, she went inside the underworld version of it, assuming that she'd find the former queen there. She assumed they weren't much different from one another, so she figured where she'd find Regina in the real world, she'd find her mother in the underworld version.

After entering the building and then the office, she was right. She saw someone in the chair. She could tell that she had to be her mother, since there were some things that she knew Regina got from in looks.

"You must be Cora," Katherine greeted.

"Who are you? What do you want?"

"Katherine Pierce. I know Regina and Rumple. I thought we could help each other. I just escaped Hades' guard dog. I put him asleep, but he won't stay like that forever. If you help me with Hades until Rumple gets me out of here, I can help you. Just because we've done terrible things in the past, doesn't make it right to keep those here that have tried to redeem themselves. Besides, I'm sure it's what Regina would do if she was here, instead. And two people with a common enemy can accomplish a common goal."

Cora had never met or seen her before, but after what she'd said, Cora had to agree with her. And she did want out of here. And if she was a friend of her daughter's, and whatever she was to Rumple, she'd definitely help her get rid of Hades. Especially, if it won her her freedom from Hades.

"I couldn't agree more," she replied.

With that, the two of them began to work together, figuring out how to defeat Hades.

A few hours later, Hades discovered that Katherine had escaped, which made him mad, and he had a couple people go hunt her down.

The next day, the people found her and brought her to Hades. Then they left, knowing their job was complete.

“Well, this has become quite an exciting day,” he commented.

“How about I just kill you and we can end this,” she replied. Maybe if she said her words right, he’d reveal something unintentionally that she could use on him.

“Everyone knows you can’t kill me. I’m Hades. This…this is death,” he replied.

“Well, duh. But that doesn’t mean nothing is possible. Anything is possible if you have hope,” she replied.

“Well, see. That doesn’t fly down here. Bringing hope to my domain is punishment by what I see fit,” he informed her.

“Then get it over with,” she said, not afraid of him, or what might be in store for her.

“Then so be it,” he replied.

A few minutes later, after he’d educated her about the river of the lost souls, not knowing that she already knew all about it, he tied her to a crane hook.

Meanwhile, Rumple had just arrived in the underworld and, after having a chat at the diner, knew where she was, so he went to his lair and rescued her without an issue, since Hades wasn’t there at the time, and they left the lair.

They soon were on the streets. Rumple was ready to leave, but she wasn’t. She wasn’t going to go against the deal she made Cora. And so, she gave Cora peace, which allowed Cora to leave the underworld. Then, shortly after, Kat and Rumple left the underworld, going back home.

In the end, everyone was okay, and Hades stayed in the underworld, while Rumple and Kat continued their happy ending, and even had a daughter, which they named Pearl Anne Petrova. So, all is well that ends well.
