Big Win

Big Win

A Poem by DaughterNature

Quick thousands

promised to us on billboards

and receipts

and 30-second commercials:

collect the tokens

scratch and match ‘em

fill out this survey

play your cards right

back the best horse

bet on all black

let it ride

put your name in the hat

BINGO basket

throw your hat in the ring

drop a quarter in and pull the arm, push the button

100th customer

What’s behind door #1?

Is that your final answer?

But

I’ve never won a

drawing --

don’t have that kind of luck --

so I write poems

no one will pay for

and make sure my leisure is

free.
