The Snake

The Snake

A Poem by David Lewis Paget

Men are composed of lust and mind,

You women, of heart and soul,

We stumble on through our lives and find

That somehow, we’re growing old,

And all of those brief flirtations that

Persuaded us to part,

Were simply an aberration that

Destroyed a faithful heart.

When trust is no longer part of what

We thought was ours to keep,

Our hearts curl up in a corner,

Men despair, and women weep,

We plead and say that ‘I’m sorry!’

But then ‘sorry’ is just a word,

And moments of infidelity

Are the deepest kind of hurt.

Men are lured from their partners by

A vision of shapely thighs,

While women tend to be softened by

A kindly look in the eyes,

In all, it’s part of the weakness that

We’re prone to, in the flesh,

But love is the great cohesive force,

Unless we settle for less.

Then guilt is the snake that comes between

That easy flow of grace,

The snake that slithers behind the eyes

When you can’t look her in the face,

And that is the parting moment when

You know that love has fled,

As you lie there, back to back, each on

The other side of the bed!

Sir David, a very inspiring and a reminding one...for it inspires me again, this exceptional work which only few writers can do...reminding people of how a "snake" can destroy a happy married life.

Lust is that temptation...the snake, which we have to conquer.

Trust can be destroyed..and sorry is just a word, which cannot mend it all easily.

This is an eye-opener for those who entertain the "snakes" in their lives.

I love this piece. Thanks, Sir David. :)

It's sad when trust goes out of a marriage ... you captured this well, David.

This is such a powerful piece. Often that snake has entwined itself into many a wonderful relationship only to slither on once the damage is done. Excellent work.

I seem to always find such wisdom and grace in your words, and I can't even count anymore how many times your words have moved me. The wisdom that flows from your pen with such skill and careful thought is an inspiration to me.

Trust is hard to earn and so easy to lose. And real relationships are hard because we are different (the sexes) and we want different things. I've heard that women want to be loved and men want to be respected. And men are visual creatures...This is a thoughtful poem, David and true. Love is the cohesive force unless we settle for less.

A different side to your writing and a rather delicate topic, but very true. When the love has fled there is only one thing for it I'm afraid. There is no point in pretending. Women are very good at reading men and men are not very good at hiding the truth so the snake will always be revealed eventually.

This happens. Couples just have to move past it.
