Burned Out

Burned Out

A Poem by David Lewis Paget

The tide has dumped me in some trough

To bleed the longing from my lift
And, like a fool who cries ‘Enough!’
I know not where to turn, or shift.
My sails hang limpid in the calm
That burst upon the storm in me
And left me helpless, in alarm,
Burned out, defeated, vanquished me.
