Memories

Memories

A Poem by Chris Rampersad
"

This was meant to be a short poem but it ended up like this. Hope it's liked.

"

I sit on this old rocking chair and stare up at the moon,

Knowing that my time is near,

I’ll be gone by noon,

Oh what a life I’ve had,

I’m going to miss being here,

The good times,

The bad times,

The times that brought me fear,

I got up and looked around,

At the place that I call home,

Tonight it feels so quiet,

But I’ve never felt alone,

When I was 5 my father put that swing up in the yard,

He tried to climb the tree and fell down really hard,

When I was 7 my older brother said “Let’s play hide and seek.”

Then while running to look for me,

He fell and cut his knee,

I was 10 back then when I first got into a fight,

I came home limping,

In cuts and bruises,

And my mother scolded me,

She said “Son I know you’re young,

But listen to what I say,

It’s never right to hit another,

On any given day,

Because they have family just like you,

So think before you do”,

That was the first life lesson I learned,

Right here on these steps,

One that I never forget,

When I was 15 my father had a heart attack,

I still recall the fear I felt as these memories come flowing back,

He was hospitalized that week,

His survival, it looked bleak,

But he came back home eventually,

As healthy as can be,

A chill runs down my spine every time I think,

That I could have lost a family,

I still remember that exciting day my brother came rushing in,

He said “HAVE YOU ALL HEARD THE NEWS? MY DARLING’S HAVING TWINS”,

I turned 23 that day,

The first I saw her face,

I smiled at her and she smiled right back,

Before she punched me in the face,

I fell in love right then and there,

As I regained consciousness,

It turns out she mistook me, for someone else she knew,

She spent the rest of that month telling me sorry,

And she soon became my friend,

She never realized that just by being close,

She’d made it up to me,

It was hard and very long,

But I eventually won her love,

Then finally,

In front this house,

I asked her to marry me,

She accepted me immediately,

Without hesitation,

My family they all witnessed this in great elation,

And for the next few months we prepared,

In great anticipation,

So I sit here unable to sleep, the night before I wed,

Tomorrow I’ll be leaving this place,

To make more memories,

To make another house a home.
