An Ode to Dr. Quinn and the Karate Kid

An Ode to Dr. Quinn and the Karate Kid

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

You know you were born in the 90's if...

"

I was driving down the street the other day
Blasting some Falling Up, Fall Out Boy, Fall of Troy,
And then there was this kid
Looking at me with a pout and a grin
Full of some f*****g sin
He let a little devil in.
He flipped me the bird, gave me the finger, what a stinger, what the hell?
And I’m doing well
In this Hell.

Eighteen years ago
That never would have happened.
Eighteen years ago
5-4-3-2-1 kept our hands at bay.
Eighteen years today
My childhood days have ended.
Eighteen years ago
Held such simpler days.

I grew up with Mr. Miyagi, and green Tommy, and was afraid of the dark.
But now it’s growing up.
Getting a job, facing the mob, trying not to get robbed.
Now, it’s getting old.
Where went Hercules, Dr. Quinn, and the freshest young prince?
Here I am growing up.
Here I am moving on.
Missing simple days, it’s a phase, about to be erased.

Eighteen years ago
I can’t remember any sin.
Eighteen years ago
5-4-3-2-1 cartoon heroes save the day.
Eighteen years today
Those awesome pure thoughts hit the end.
Eighteen years ago
Were full of such simpler days.

Playing dominoes, smoking dro, they know how to grow.
Dancing dolls, late night brawls, he’ll kick Roddy’s a*s.
Video games, faith is lame, porno pose, point three second fame.
Raise your hand, dropping band, blockade, no other gang can pass.

Eighteen years ago
That never would have happened.
Eighteen years ago
5-4-3-2-1 kept our hands at bay.
Eighteen years today
My childhood days have ended.
Eighteen years ago
Held such simpler days.

I'd like to say it's a nostalgic poem but since eighteen years ago was when I was born, I'm not quite sure if we're on the same page. Even so, I have to agree that life way back was a lot simpler and people those days were a lot more respectful (at least from what I heard). It's good to be able to read something that brings me back to days when I still don't have much memories to look back with.

Keep Writing. ^___^

Very well written poem about changing times and growing up. The world is getting more complex and more dangerous with each generation. Your poem is very fun to read.

Oh I remember the good old days and this just bought it all back.
I feel the keen regret in leaving those simple times behind.
I know how you feel about this younger generation. They all seem so old for their age, so experienced and troublesome. But wouldnt we have been the same for the generation before us? I guess it's just the way it goes. I hate to think what the next generation will have to experience.
Stunning write!

Hmm, sad am I of your lost youth.
You lament the passing of simpler times through this haunting poem and I feel that loss through your words.
I also see the young man standing there as he views his new world order and doesn't quite know what he can trust and what he can't. There is suspicion of many things in his new world and a lacking of trust in what he once thought to be friendly.
All in all, it is a powerfully written piece and I am sure the writer has a very bright future ahead of him.
All the best and may the sun shine on you once again.
