Not Worth What She Shines Like

Not Worth What She Shines Like

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

The last song I ever wrote for a pearl

"

Whenever I’m near you,
    You make my heart soar so high;
    You make my head fly so high;
    You just make me feel so high.
I feel your touch coursing through me.
It is that one I’ve never felt.
I hear your voice whispering to me.
It makes all of my stone walls melt.
Whenever I’m near you,
    You make my heart soar so high;
    You make my head fly so high;
    You just make me feel so high.
But even greater than this escalation,
Your imitation for my imagination
Has this awesome power
That knows just how to bring me down.

You pull me down
Flat against the ground.
You pull me down
Even past the ground.
You pull me down,
Unexpected liar.
You drag me down,
Down into Hell’s fire.

The poison in your palms
Never touched mine,
Thank God.
The evil in your lips
Never touched mine,
Thank God.
The shadows of your embrace
I never held,
Thank God.
Your four cursed letters
I never heard-
-Oh God.

You pull me down
Flat against the ground.
You pull me down
Even past the ground.
You pull me down,
Unforgivable liar.
You drag me down,
Down into Hell’s fire.

I’ll admit I’ve got poison,
    But I’ve always kept it in.
I’ll admit I’ve got evil,
    And now you force it out.
I’ll admit I’ve got shadows,
    But I’ve always kept them in.
I’ll admit that I have curses,
    And now you force them out.

So, I’ll make you regret all of this.
So easy to make you hate his kiss.
Don’t worry.  You’ve got naught to fear.
You won’t hear me whisper in your ear.
        Oh-no-no.  This’ll be subtle.
I will become what you longed for.
Nothing I’ll even have to try for.
Don’t worry.  These lips you’ll not kiss.
Maybe it’s my voice that you’ll miss.

You pulled me down
Flat against the ground.
You pulled me down
Even past the ground.
You pulled me down.
When’d you become this liar?
You dragged me down.
Now, shall I die in Hell’s fire?

What have I become-
-Oh God?
