Note From The Wise

Note From The Wise

A Poem by Emma DeBoer
"

Written in 2010 For those of you feeling hopeless

"
As I wait here in the darkness
With hatred in my heart,
I start to remember
The reasons we grew apart.
I used to ask myself questions
About why I felt so guilty
& why I was so sad.
Now I know that these
Unanswered questions
Aren't that bad.
If I were to know
That it would lead to this,
I would have quit my pondering
& it would've gone amiss.
I could've gone far.
My heart was just so broken.
I tied the noose
Around my neck
And ended with some choking.
I didn't think
That in afterlife,
You could feel regret.
So I leave this note to tell you
To stop with all
The fret.

I like this very much. It speaks of common teen issues in a mature and artsy way. The imagery is good and the point straightforward. It trivializes a seemingly big problem and sometimes we need that to gain perspective of our realities. I also like the implication that the speaker is someone who has recently died and has regret as he/she waits in a limbo of dark afterlife. Well done!
