That Day

That Day

A Poem by Shannon Howard

Remember that day,
You showed me around?
You took me to places,
Across the whole town.
Areas few people knew,
You gave the secret to me.
That day was the best,
You made me so happy.

Remember that day,
We shared a first kiss?
Out by the lake,
Neither of us could resist.
I felt wanted and loved,
I wasn't alone.
What you gave me that day,
I had never been shown.

Remember that day,
You left for Japan.
The only marine,
I would ever give my hand.
You promised a return,
Safely and sound.
That day was upsetting,
I felt my heart hit the ground.

Remember that day,
You claimed your love?
I became fearful, terrified;
But in you I had trust.
To be with you for life,
I wanted so much.
That day I knew,
We had more than just lust.

Remember that day,
You surprised me at school?
I jumped in your arms,
And cried like a fool.
You held me so tight,
Like never before!
That day was one for the books,
You left me wanting more.

Remember that day,
I gave you my secret?
I told you my plan,
To finally fix it.
Happier than ever,
We both smiled bright.
I told you that day,
My entire fight.

Remember that day,
You were beaten so bad?
I felt guilt like no other,
I blamed myself for that.
As much as I could,
I stayed by your side.
That day was not good,
I did nothing but cry.

Remember that day,
You woke up, just fine.
Praising God your ok,
Your voice blew my mind.
We talked about marriage,
Growing old with each other.
I had everything that day,
I couldn't wait to go further.

And then that day came,
Not even two days later.
One day you were well,
Next you met our creator.
I felt abandoned, betrayed;
You were my hero.
That day you left me,
I became empty and hollow.

We had so many plans,
Our future was bright.
Together we would move forward,
Everything we wanted was in sight.
That day you were buried,
So was my heart.
I only want you, no one else;
Life without you is hard.

And free the tarnish, Polish off and move on

Been there before, tarnishing, and then it
Happen without warning, oh my goodness
