I Stared Into The Abyss

I Stared Into The Abyss

A Poem by Brandon Taylor-Black
"

An experimental piece, obviously working on the whole " if you stare into abyss, it stares into you".

"
And into vacant yonder pass
I stared, as into the abyss
Defiled the purity of my soul
And took the monsters hand

Down corridors, he briskly led
I fought my way through old cobwebs
That stuck to me, inducing panic
He just looked and laughed cold thunder

Over bloodied fields we strode
Over rotting Corpses, rode
Looking for humanity
Across oceans tainted red

Noble or pauper, all were deceased
By Faith, by Colour; by naught more than greed
Buildings of worship, now smouldering ruins
Under midnight's dark facade

Bones of lover's, brothers; children
Crumbled to dust without feeling
Legacies, creeds now lost to the void
Time still slithers on

Monuments to mark a passing
Crumbled chambers tell of gassing
Bullets deep in flesh and earth
Embraced, Hate onwards, marched

I stood, aghast, at what I'd seen
Visions of hatred, war; the obscene
To the beast I turned, answers demanded
The abyss had shown me Man...
