"
A Christian Nation ... A nation can never be a 'christian.' The legal entity called a 'nation' is not a being. The head of a 'state' is not that 'state' either. A nation or the state was not made in the image and likeness of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; nor can they ever be. A nation can however be made up of christians, and the governance of the same by christians.

Therefore, for a nation to be christian its citizen membership must be christian. And for its citizen membership to be christian they must be examples of the Christ who is Jesus, son of Mary, son of God, Messiah as prophesied.

To understand what the above two paragraphs mean, one must understand what is a 'christian.' The Judeo-Christian Bible states that it was in Antioch that those who followed Jesus the Crucified and Resurrected Christ were first called 'christian' - from the Greek, one who is like the anointed.

From a slur to a badge of honor, the moniker 'christian' has stuck as a name to all of those who follow Jesus Christ as savior and as lord.

To follow after Jesus truly, one must walk with Him to the cross and die: die to sin, die to self. After the cross came life. All those who believe accept in their heart that at the cross their every sin [acts of separation from God the Father] were put on trial, condemned to death, and laid upon Jesus who took on our separation and just punishment that we might live. Jesus took upon himself our sin, our shame, our just punishment, and died that He might overcome sin, death, and the grave to be Lord of All. On the third day He arose in His flesh, resurrected mortal flesh to put on immortality. He ascended to the Father to finish the sacrifice and to take His place in Heaven. He returned to Earth to confirm His witness that all of these things had been done just as the prophets of old had said. He walked among us 40 more days then was ascended to His place at the right hand of the Father in Heaven. He did not leave us orphans but gave us His Holy Spirit at Pentacost - a baptism of the Holy Spirit and of Fire.

To each who walks in the fullness of what Jesus sacrificed all to give, to them has been given the power to save the nations for Christ Jesus. To them has been given the power to change nations one person at a time until the whole nation walks with God through the Lord Jesus Christ. To them has been given the power to convert nations into a Christian Nation. Amen.

You were right on here, Doc. Christianity is so much more than a name. It is not just a belief system, but a lifestyle. I have learned to sit back and watch those that call themselves Christians awhile until I can see what they are made of...After all, the scripture says, "We will know them by their fruit." If there is no fruit-Chances are they haven't made a commitment to Christ. That commitment is life changing and love is the mark. Neither do I expect perfection, as we are all sinners saved by grace. So, I think there needs to be a balance.

I think when they say America is predominantly a Christian nation, it is more a blanket statement. Many of our forefathers did have a strong belief in God but I guess believing in Him and actually following Him are entirely two different things.

Thanks for provoking some great thought. You are always right up there in that arena and we need to have our brains picked.

Thought provoking, and so true. So many people in our nation call themselves Christian, yet have no relationship with Christ, never submitted their lives to Him. I have several friends and relatives like this. I absolutely love this piece, and I will be more than willing to read any more like it that you write! Now you have my mind going - I may have to go off and write!

I call myself a Christian - doubts and all...for me Christianity is as much a process as it is an identity, but I found this solidly written, and thought provoking. I don't know how many read it at CN, but it was worth the read over there and here.

For one to believe you must buy into the whole package. You cannot call yourself a believer if you hold onto doubts. You specified your belief that as a person calling themselves Christians it is not enough to believe that He existed but you must also believe in all that He stands for and what he sacrificed for us. Nations may not be Christian but Christians have made nations. You took a good strong leap of faith and placed your heart and your beliefs on the chopping block for all too see. Bravo.

Wow!!! Love it!!! I'm not the run of the mill Christian. I believe God loves everyone! I believe that God is bigger than anyone or anything, and I believe that God loves everyone regardless of who they call their God.

Well done!!

It would be easy to agree with this philosophy were it not for a solid friend who served in Nam and is an atheist, and another closer friend who is Jewish. Me? I'm a druid witch waiting for man to forsake greed.
This is a nation founded on individual responsibility and freedom.

I'm stunned. A writer who actually is a Christian, and also has the courage to stand up and be proud of it. I was just recently saved, so my faith is about as strong a a Pringle. lol. I made my confession in front of total strangers. God must have been stunned. lol. I was a Christian several times in my life. Once when I was up for parole. I was turned down, and so , like an immature kid, I refused to believe. I thought if I turned my life over to God, in front of people I didn't know, I would feel a jolt of lightening...that I would immediately feel his presence. I guess He doesn't work like that. I loved your explanation of Christianity. It helped.
Today, I am almost obsessed with helping stop the genocide in Darfur...a genocide being committed by Islamic fundamentalists. I am the last person who should be doing this, but I almost feel guided. Thank you for this incredible piece. Rain..
