Her Very Best

Her Very Best

A Poem by Annabelle Lee
"

.... story with a twist

"
Princess Emma on her own
No chance to by herself sit on the throne
Must wait for a man to make her kingdom complete
To wear her crown and give her his ring
Learned from birth, a queen's duties all domestic
Keeping castle and raising heirs could get quite hectic
Princess Emma did not like that
She donned trousers and a travelers' cap
She went to town in complete disguise
Hidden completely from searching eyes
Made to the edge of her kingdom before
Realizing the city had been closed in by doors
If only she could have one raised
But for herself only it would take several days
She wanders for weeks
Scared and hungry
A chance to see the off palace ground for the first time ever
A chance to see the conditions and feel the weather
She felt cold, it rained for days
And the doors were never raised
Peasants upon corners. all cold and starved
Not one flower in a garden, no green front yards
Even the children looked sullen and sad
Princess was oblivious to the life that they had
She wanted to fix it, wanted to reach out
So she ran back to the castle to ask what this was about
Greeted by hugs and dresses and food
Not one bit of it looked any good
Plead her case to her father, the King
Was told she could do whatever she wanted once she had the ring
Princess Emma cut off her hair and wore pants
In hopes that someday for a boy she may pass
She approaches the King, "Is this what you want?"
He steps back, aghast, "Emma, Stop!"
"You're listening now, Father, are you not?"
"Emma, hush now, you've already lost."
The princess kept trying
The king kept fighting
Emma soon had fallen sick
The King and Queen knew that this was it
The princess was tired of being ignored
No longer anything worth fighting for
Not only did she quit fighting the attack
She resisted treatment, and faded fast
On the day she finally passed
She wrote these words, they were her last
May my efforts not be in vain
For all my citizens should not be in pain
The palace has room to sleep and money to spend
But we have hands that we choose not to lend
I, the princess, did so much trying
To keep the homeless from cold and the sick from dying
You never, not once, chose to listen to me
And now is the time to set my anger free
The King and Queen overcome with grief
Made possible for a common thief
To break into the palace vaults and steal
And supply the peasants with another meal
The papers called him a Robin Hood
He gave to the citizens what the castle should
Princess Emma through both life and death, a death that was assumed
Worked far to hard to feed and give room
For every night, Robin Hood relaxes
And undoes those wraps of his
He pulls off his cap and washes his face
And she feels as if she's finally found her place
Living among Merry Men and common folk
And not once of a previous life has she spoke
For no one knows the Robin Hood
Although all of the townspeople should
But everyone knows about the princess
And how she tried her very best

That. Was. Epic.

The absolute ONLY thing I could POSSIBLY offer is "peasants upon corners" I would change to "peasants in corners" just because it kind of confused me for a second the first time through.

But seriously, this is delightful.

That is all. :)

This was one of the best ones yet! :) You did a great job with this, and I was so into it that I frowned when it came to an end. :) You should definitely write something similar to this again. :)

Great, great job.

Abby. :)

You are most welcome. :)
Very well written Annabelle, love the twist. Something a bit different from your pen, much enjoyed your story within your poem.

I think you meant to 'be' in the second line.

I got the idea of a poetic story, in actuality, after watching Jack the Giant slayer last weekend
