Flash

A Poem by Sanjukta Sen Banerjee
"

Moments make or break, decide & rule.Call it mystery or magic-the might of those singular moments of chance turned courses in myths, history, science or continue to do so in our daily human lives

"

FLASH

The moment Prometheus stole fire from heaven

And pieces of flint collided and colluded on earth

To set the first flame outside  Paleolithic caves

The moment lighting struck

And chose to cook  molecules in the primordial soup

Into protein blocks of life

OR when it knocked  unconscious a young kite flyer

The moment  the one in a million swimming  and  fighting all along

Meets and unites  to breathe life in a new life

The moment  eyes meet ,cupid shoots and hearts fuse

The moment  the forbidden apple was bitten

Or when it fell from the tree on a sleeping young scholar

Or when a singing kettle set the engine rolling for a new age

The moment a casual glance or a chance overhearing

Wreaks havoc on the Richter scale

Demolishing trust and razing years old mansions of fidelity

Or  when the hydraulic brake simply breaks down

In a racing and crashing automobile

Its all a matter of a flash, a fleeting instant

That brings an eternal change, accidental though

Like the hand at a card game

That makes princes of paupers  and paupers of princes

When life is conceived or a new idea germinates,

When a new age is born or love is bred

Or faith is lost or perhaps everything ceases forever

Oh that  flash ! Blinding and illuminating

(Like that flash bulb that seals a moment for posterity on silver bromide strip)

That deciding moment when destiny decides the course

Rest is just a charted journey till its time for the next Flash!

Sanjukta Sen Banerjee
One lazy lonely afternoon I was dusting off college textbooks on probability and my mind turned statue at glance of word chance . And the statue thought of various moments of chance be it the Greek myth of Prometheus stealing fire or its accidental discovery in old ages or the very instance of evolution of first spec of life ; the sudden flash of ideas or questions in minds of thinkers like Sir Issac Newton hit by the apple, or benjamin Franklin flying kite or James Watts hearing the kettle whistle. The same random occurrences rule our births, loves, betrayals or death- in short the universe and eternity
