"The Strange Awakening"

"The Strange Awakening"

A Poem by Dove
"

In the true spirit of Halloween

"

Last night as I lay softly sleeping,
I heard something frightful quietly creeping.
It woke me from a restless sleep,
I dared not make a single peep.
The ghostly figure circled my bed,
Under my blankets I shivered with dread.
It pulled on my covers, beckoning me to wake,
I stood up still shaking knowing not what to make...
Of this strange visitor whose intentions not known.
It then let out a bone chilling sort of a groan.
And it stood there hovering and pointing to the door,
So I reluctantly shuffled across the cold icy floor.
I wondered what fate would befall me this night,
As I left with the stranger made of half dark and half light.
It led me out of our house and into the woods,
to a circle of people all wearing black hoods.
I stumbled on a tree limb and tore my night gown
and stepped in a puddle of mud with a frown.
They were chanting and standing around a great fire.
They all stopped and looked at me shouting out "Liar!"
I knew not what they spoke of did not like their claims,
So away I ran from the circle and the bright burning flames.
Then one of them followed me tugging on my sleeve,
saying "Please come back, it is for you that we grieve"
This puzzled me and made me ask "Why is this so?"
Then the covenant gathered round me so I could know.
"Long ago you were one of us and you left us here alone
and turned all our blood pumping hearts into stone"
"You are mistaken, I said. It could not have been me,
For I am not one of you, please let me be"
And I ran once again but my steps soon took flight,
and with the full moon to guide me I sailed into the night.
As I looked down below me my memories became clear
Of a time I was with them, yes I was right here!
I told them one night that my powers were weak,
I could not cast a spell so my future was bleak.
Then they mocked me and taunted me with spells quite complex,
So I summoned my powers and put on them a hex.
From that day forward they suffered alone,
For I incanted a spell turning their hearts into stone.
Now remembering what I had done on that night,
I conjured a new spell to make all things right.
"As ice will melt when warm winds are blown,
Change back their hearts that I turned into stone"
The witches now dancing and laughing once more,
I found myself standing on my own bedroom floor.
"It was but a dream" I sighed, looking down,
Where I saw the hole that was torn into my gown
And the mud from my feet that had tracked up the floor.
It was not a dream, but was something much more.
These strange goings on happen every year,
Only when All Hallows Eve is near.

Wow, this is a fun read--wonderful storytelling. There's plenty of detail and description, and the rhyming scheme has flow a that makes me wish there were more.!
