Self-Inflicted Nightmares

Self-Inflicted Nightmares

A Poem by Charley Nicole
"

Why do we as humans intentionally impair our minds?

"
It all becomes alive when you listen. The noises magnify while ideas become vivid in your mind. Even the smallest sound becomes something that you would have never have hear to begin with. Even the smallest sound morphs into something greater. Your mind playing tricks on you. The silence becomes ringing in your ears. Howling wind outside becomes a monster unknown. Only a single thought can change the way you see or hear something.

Your eyes playing tricks on your mind in the dark of night. The clothes in your closet begin to look as if someone or something is standing there. The shadows slowly creeping up the walls. A single look in the mirror can change your innocent reflection into a monster.

We are deliberately sabotaging ourselves. There is no monster, simply the wind. There are no people, just ordinary clothes in your closet. Yet, we think of these things and everything around us is seen differently in an instant.

Perception. Our minds believe what they want to believe and twist things into better or worse than what they really are. Nice essay.
