Upon Further Reflection (Part 3)

Upon Further Reflection (Part 3)

A Poem by Désiré Desrosiers
"

A turn from passion towards gratitude, directed towards parents.

"

My father

regained his passion for his degree,

architecture.

More like,

recognized,

after all these years.

After my questioning him,

his immediate response was,

“I’ve lost my passion.

I need money.”

After a week,

he tells me,

“My parents

are very old.

Without my support,

death will catch up to them.

I want them here with me

for as long as possible,

to fulfill my duty

as a son.

I still love architecture,

I deeply do,

but I must express

my gratitude

for my parents.”

How will I express my thanks?

The same,

to keep my parents alive

for as long as possible?

When will I feel,

for my parents,

gratitude?

Nice work,

The best way to express gratitude to our parents is to be happy and live a life they can be proud of. Wasn't this their goal in having and raising us? Hopefully if we become reasonably successful and have the time and resources to provide them care and comfort in their senior years; we will do so.

Our parents spent a great deal of time teaching us how to live. In the end if we remain close to them, they will also teach us how to die.

Keeping our parents alive as long as possible is often a selfish goal. This is the goal of most hospitals; which often doesn't really keep people alive longer, but just makes them die slower.

Enjoy the moments you have with them and care for them as you would your own children if that time should come. Acknowledging their mortality is the key to realizing our own.
