A Poem by Lizzie Madloch

I write some poems to win contests
and get printed in glossy magazines.
I write poems that look neat on the page
and post them on social media.

I write poems to speak out loud.
So far they’ve all been to get back at my exes.
I write them the way I want them to sound--
cacophony of squished lines and phrases,
hardly any stanzas at all.
I memorize them before I go on stage,
but still hold a crumpled copy in a sweaty hand
as an insurance policy.

Then
I write some poems just for me.
I think they’re beautiful,
and they do live by the loose rules of poetry.
Honest.
I believe they’ll be ready to be read in awhile
by the same eyes that have now seen more.

that's mostly what poetry is, writing what you feel about certain things, particularly people, especially people that have affected you strongly. I hope that didn't sound rude, I was simply sharing my thoughts :)
