Barbed-wire

Barbed-wire

A Poem by Ebs Newman

What holds us back?
From that colorful picture photograph of our wildest dreams
We think our want will see us through
All the heart ache, bad mistakes, wrong turns
We walk down the beaten track
Enviously wave at the brave
Who walk to their own beat
What holds us down?
Like a string of barbed-wire wrapped around our conscience
Questioning our every move we ever made
Sitting. Waiting.
Enviously we wave at the bold
Who live to their own lines.
Once we used to frown at the eccentric
Now we look on green with envy.

And also that 'other side' - always greener still...

Self consciousness can be such an endemic affliction. I think you touched on it quite well
