Twisted Reflections

Twisted Reflections

A Poem by El Cu Cuy

You wake up from a long, deep sleep.

You don’t know what’s going on.

You’re in a meadow.

What do you do now?

There are trees everywhere.

You try to find the path you’re supposed to walk.

It’s difficult.

Branches and bushes keep getting in your way.

There’s a thorn bush that looms up in front of you.

There’s a little girls head peeking out of it.

“You shouldn’t come this way,” she says.

You tell her that you want to.

It feels different for some reason.

She has a bruise on her cheek.

You wonder what happened.

“It’s dangerous this way,” she says.

You tell her that you want to go this way.

“Fine,” she says sadly.

Her head disappears with the bushes.

You start walking towards the end of the path.

You see squirrels and other animals running away.

Too scared to exit their serene shelter.

You hear the sound of metal hitting wood.

You smell apple pies, cooling under the shade.

A rooster crows in the distance.

You walk up the steps towards the little brick building.

You see a young man chopping wood by the house.

He’s barebacked and he has what look like lashes on his back.

You hear the door creak and an older man walks out.

He looks at you with a leering gaze.

“So. You decided to come back finally eh?” he says.

You tell him that you don’t know what he’s talking about.

“Well. I’ll just put you back to work now,” he states.

You have no idea what he’s talking about as he grabs you by the wrist.

Your little girl arms don’t pose much resistance to his older manly arms.

He throws you down onto the ground as he starts to unbuckle his belt.

You wish that you had never woken back up as you remember the times of humility.

I enjoyed the visualisation, but the cadence, and presentation actually took me out of the otherwise potentially immersive experience.

I think this would work much better, if re-worked into a bit of flash fiction.
