Drifter

Drifter

A Poem by Elaenor Aisling

I found myself drifting
through eternity
tethered to earth by a few heartstrings
I feared would snap
If plucked

The birds of paradise, my companions,
soared about me
their myriad feathers my cloak
as they lighted on my shoulders
shielding me
from skeptical eyes.

Time reached out to take me,
his smooth hands became gnarled
Eternity ages time
in it, he can never end
but must continue the dance he has done
for a thousand years and forever.

So still I drift through eternity
my robe of feathers unstirred
never to return
for you decided
to pluck the strings of my heart.
