Short-lived Fire

A Story by Elcques

She leaned on his shoulder and placed her hand near the fireplace. Everything felt like they were about to freeze: the room, her body, her heart.
Slowly, the pieces of wood were being swallowed by the fire.
She watched.
A faint smile had escaped from her lips when she saw that nothing but cinders remained on the once burning fire. She had also lost the smallest remaining amount of heat now, and it was completely cold.
He stood up and stared on the abandoned fireplace. And for a moment, he remained silent. The night was dead and there was no other noise except for her sobs that she tried hard to suppress. He gazed at her and grimaced at the small hand that clung to his, gave it a firm squeeze.
"I used to love you too," he said at last and left the room.

What I loved the most about this piece is the approach you had taken in displaying a fading love... It was wonderfully executed, Elcques. And unlike anything I have read before in exhibiting a degrading flame. Utterly unique. In so many ways it had broke my sentimental heart, how they had both simply watched, both understanding what was happening between them. Not tossing in another log to rekindle the spark, simply weeping and squeezing their devastating farewell. I love this, am one to pray for happy endings, but had honestly loved this nonetheless. It had brought tears to my eyes for what was lost. As there is a visible beauty between the two. Thank you so much for sharing this special piece of art.
