SEASONS / REASONS

SEASONS / REASONS

A Poem by Ellen Hammond

SEASONS / REASONS

He's only a child, not yet thirteen
But his eyes are the saddest that I've ever seen

Lord, help him to find the strength to go on
Fill his lonely heart with your joy and a song

It's been said, these are the best years of his life
Not a thought to encourage a soul torn with strife

I feel his torment, anger, and pain
Show me dear Lord how to reach him again

Help me to listen, even when he won't speak
And assure him that crying won't mean he is weak

For tears can release the pain deep inside
Where he is withdrawing  and trying to hide

Your Spirit sees through all of his futile disguise
Flow through me sweet Jesus, so he'll recognize

Your understanding, acceptance and love
Which is always ordained by our Father above

His heart seems so burdened for such a young boy
Revive and renew him, with your grace and joy

Give him a vision of the great things in store
As daily you bless him, more and more

Open his eyes so he can see
True peace and happiness comes from thee

Then he will discover in the passing of years
Spiritual growth is often watered with tears

And just as the flowers need a sunny season
Shine on him, so he'll see the reason

For the tears and the sorrow he's been trying to bear
Increase his compassion, and make him more aware

Of others who suffer in their times of growth
Then he can assure them, it takes a balance of both

Laughter and tears, or sunshine and rain
To renew a life so it can blossom again

And show forth the beauty, compassion and love
Which is merely a reflection of the Lord above
