Stretching

Stretching

A Poem by Ellen Mary

Nails with dirt

Crawling out of the hole
And walking far, far away from it
Looking back and laughing
The sun is always your best friend
Reddening your cheeks
And bringing life
In all literal and non literal senses

Running towards the see saw and tumbling to jump skywards
Potholes by man and burrows by animals
And cliffs and sandpits by nature
Some with warning signs
And some with signs that you learn to recognize
Those of which you take heed

Every breath of air is a rebirth
And every exhale is of the stale
Old life

Everyday adventures are being prepared for
Getting equipped with ropes and ladders
For those princesses and mad hatters
Lurking around the corners

Still curious
A cat tries to jump in the garbage can
To investigate the rattling, scratching sound coming from inside
The cat might jump up, hoping to find a meal or two
Or maybe a vicious raccoon
The cat might be too old, too tired and decrepit to jump up
The cat might get scared, hiss and run
The cat may have a good home, with food to eat
So why would it want to go into a garbage
Maybe bring a present home for its beloved caregiver?
Cats are quite cool
Following their instincts
Don’t forget your instincts
