Mistakes to avoid in your writingsA Story by ElsaAvendEven if you are an experienced writer or diligent student, there is a chance you haven't noticed some tricky errors that can lower your final grade. Therefore, I suggest you look through the following6 Common Mistakes to Avoid: Then and than. 'Than' is used for comparison while 'Then' is used to refer tosomething taking place or happening next. It’s and its. "Its" indicates the possessions while "it's" is short for "it is." Use of apostrophe. You can use apostrophes for at least two reasons: to indicate a contraction (have not and haven't) or possession (dog's). However, students frequently make mistakes while expressing plural tense. Not "Only cat's should be fed with cat-food" but "Only cats should be fed with cat-food"; "I forgot my dog's leash" but "I forgot my dogs' leashes." Misuse of commas. Use commas to make logical pauses within the long sentences. But, if the second part of the sentence can stand on its own, then you better use a semi-colon or split it into two. Which and That. "That" is a restrictive pronoun referring to the other word, e.g., "I don't use services that don't have customer reviews." "Which" is used to introduce a relative clause " "I always read customer reviews, which are usually available on the corresponding page of the platform." Mixing up the tenses. The error that occurs in students' writings is the failure to maintain the present/past tense throughout the whole text. The only exception here is when you clearly state that now you are talking about an eventor something in the past. e.g., “Even ten years ago, old folks weren’t able to get news in time.” Remember these errors and try to avoid making them in your writings. © 2021 ElsaAvendAuthor's Note
