catching up

catching up

A Poem by Emily B

there’s something about the way

I can’t quite match my stride to yours,

it’s not that my legs aren’t long enough,

it’s not that I don’t want our steps to match

I reach and reach

but I can never quite

keep up

do you reckon my Robert Frost

was ever a match for your Plato?

or my Dickinson

to your Cicero?

the stars shine in your smile

and if I find myself a little behind

sometimes

I hope you’ll take me by the hand

and pull me close.

This gives a sense of having someone on a very high pedestal, and loving that person so much that you feel too blessed to have them, as if they'll disappear at any moment. Lovely. I like the beginning lines, and the ending ones- they showcase that feeling of not quite believing that you could be so lucky, without saying it.

this song, your song is delicate and fragile, full of hope and passion...i knowa lot of people think women are dumb in matters concerning heart but this poem shows the inflinchable trust we put on males...even when we are lagging behind..

This is what comes to mind when I read this piece.

Wonderful. You taught me here how you can spin magic with verses..I absolutely adored this piece. I love the last two lines - perfect ending to such a wonderful poem.

- oh - serah's so right - love, magic, intelligence, grace, beauty, mettle - your words are simply magnificent!!! -

you’d burned your eyes
into the pauses between
my incoherent, scattered notes –
caught off-guard at rasps
that had been birthed
deep in my belly

and i'd sung you songs

. ah, magic ... magic, magic, magic ... you've written the anatomy of a loving smile ... it starts with a twinkle in the eye ... and ends in that up close and personal sigh ... how can you be "a little behind" when you know ... how can you when you can know Robert Frost, Plato, Dickinson and Cicero ... oh, emily ... how you teach ... with this poetic smile of a poem ... the art of femininity ... i have often come across this line "behind every successful man is a woman" ... but the sheer love with which you demystify that ... not to speak of intelligence ... is overwhelming and inspiring ... you are graceful and gentle ... but boy do you have mettle ... i can't stop smiling ... :) ...

This has a lovely Robert Frost quality to it, Emily... But you know, no two people are alike. You cannot compare a tiger and a moth... but each is beautiful and has a place in the scheme of things... How well you express what each of us sometimes feels... but we should rejoice in our differences and feel assured that I love Emily just as she is... and I hope she loves me, wherever I am
