A fantasy Story- Chapter 1 - Dead Village

A Chapter by Rose Gryfeldor

She surveyed the empty village, an ever more familiar scene as she made her way south. Rotting beams had disintigrated and devoid of support the roofs crumbled and fell. Creeping plants wove their way through what was left of windows and doorways, and the small white blooms that were abundant on the vines only added to the sense of empty loneliness that hung heavy in the air. The light that filtered through the heavy clouds gave little clarity to the scene before her, and a light mist drifted through the air, its swirling eddies infused with magyk, and shimmering slightly.

She turned suddenly, drawn by movement in the corner of her eye, and again she spun round, half drawing her sword, tense and ready for attack. Faint laughter, echoed, screams; cries and the shouts of those attacked. She looked around, and saw apparitions in the pale mist that twisted through the houses.

She sheathed her sword, realising the movement was the imprints of the former residents, contained by the mist when the villge was abandoned.
She moved slowly, tentativly, hand on sword hilt, towards the well in the middle of the village, finding the bucket she lowered it, and raised it back up, she took a mouthfull and was suprised and pleased to find that it was uncontaminated. She filled her water skins from the bucket, one each and one to spare. Then, turning, she walked back to the edge of the village, avoiding places where the mist was thickest, to where she had left her companion.
"Here, fresh water" she said, passing the Faey boy a water skin.
"same as the last one?" He asked, after a mouthful of water,
"completly deserted, not even any bodies, just mist imprints and decaying houses".
She sighed, hand on her sword, ever alert to any sign of danger.
"we should turn back, Yukira. This place is cursed, the level of dark magyk around is too high, even by our standards." He sounded afraid.
she looked down at the Faey boy, though at 15 he could hardly be called so, even by her peoples standards, his usually turquoise eyes were a deep purple, his sensitivity to the dark magyk in the area working physical changes on the highly magyk sensitive boy.
"we have to go on, Namu, i can't turn back now. We're so close to discovering what happened here, i can feel it" she repeated the same argument she'd given him every time he said to turn back.
he shook his head, long fringe covering his eyes, and sighed heavily.
"then we should push on, i don't know about you, but i'd rather not spend the night here. The very air reeks of darkl"
Yukira looked around, and smiled,
"we'll head for that forest then and should be there by nightfall"she said, taking one last look at the village, pale grey eyes wary.
"but be on your gaurd, whatever happened here, i don't think its over"
Namu stood up, and picked up the katana that had been set to the left of his seat.
They turned towards the forest, a dark smudge on the horizon, and set off, two lone specs on the dark grassland the made up the majority of the regions terrain.

Namu looked back over his shoulder, giving the small village one last glance, he shivered, remembering the fires of his youth and the devastation they left behind, then he caught up with his friend,

"whatever happened here, its spreading, Yukira. It almost reminds me of home"

Hooked by the first chapter. The way you describe the setting is excellent. Time to move onto chapter 2.
