Paint and a canvas to blade and a wrist

Paint and a canvas to blade and a wrist

A Poem by EmmaELJ2001

I used to know this girl
Who only ever wanted to draw
But she hid her drawings
To make sure nobody saw

Her drawings were unusual
They all had a twist
Instead of paint and a canvas
She'd use a blade and her wrist

Emma, I really enjoyed this poem! The ending was a shock and reminded of me of the poem, "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson.

With the lines, "she hid her drawings/to make sure nobody saw," I feel like you are speaking about the insecurity that artist and writers feel about their work. The closing lines, "Instead of paint and a canvas/ she'd use a blade and her wrist," suggest the personal nature of writing and painting. Both writers and artists reveal pieces of themselves into their work, as if using their own blood instead paint.

I would like you to describe some of the drawings she has hidden away. I would really enjoy hearing you describe them.

Good job, Emma! I truly enjoy your work!

Tell us more of the girl.
What happened to her?
Does she still use a blade?
