Redeeming Flame

Redeeming Flame

A Poem by Nears

Darkness falls and consumes the battleground

where both sides seem to waver

battered and crippled they continue to fight

for the fear of losing the outcomes favor

Determined, he leads the battle

forced to play this twisted game

as he cuts down his enemies for

who they blame

As with always, blood as been shed

he feels no remorse as he protects

for failure would being their shame

Though they have been wounded they

fight to protect their flickering flame

The sound is deafening as swords clash and sweep

he looks on as his men battle for their souls to keep

Within the chaos he barks out commands they must

continue on for they're in too deep

He knows tonight hundreds of flames will

smother by the shadows they cast

like with always of battles past

He can't allow for his eyes to be blinded

for he knows to price of finishing last

Sharp eyes look for any opening he can take

as he fights on harder even when given hell

A warrior who won't back up knowing

what's at stake

He raises his sword to fend against the other

who presses on with each attack

His strength is fading but his flame is growing

stronger as he forced to continue on this track

Now there are just two that remain in the cold

deathly night

The dying and dead surround them as they gaze

at each other with the desire to end this fight.

Behind them stands the skills they honed over the years

and the morbid curiosity to see who'll survive

to the morning light

No one knows who took the first

step to begin the final fight

with the understanding they're on

their own

With every blow and every cry

it continues on with victory

both within their sight

It is now that fate takes control

to determine which warrior will

stand or lie

There is no turning back and both know

this night will see one or both flames die

He prays for the gods to gave

him strength to kill this man

should he have to die here or

many years from now

he'll glady do so

to protect his home

to protect his family

to restore honor to his fallen clan
