A Cup Runneth Over

A Cup Runneth Over

A Poem by Red Brick Keshner

The well has not gone dry,
less frequented maybe
by both the drawers and
the occasional passersby.

The stones are loose;
between them, mortar dissolves-
by clement or contrary
weather on seasonal cue.

The vessel is parched
and longs for its lover
by pulley once lowered
its rope frayed with disuse.

Interesting use of 'drawer' - until I read beyond the word, I pronounced it (and thought of it) as drawer as in chest of drawers. It's hard to imagine clement weather dissolving mortar (maybe all the caustic atmosphere) or how disuse would fray a rope. The whole analogy of 'unused' love to a well is a good idea and the poem works well from that perspective.
