They're only words

They're only words

A Poem by DrD

They are words

Only words

But sometimes . . . .

You had eased out of bed and dressed

You rode your bike three and a half blocks to IHOP

And returned with blueberry pancakes

You made coffee and squeezed oranges

And returned to the bedroom

To undress and slip back into my pajama top

You kissed me awake and we had breakfast in bed

You sighed deeply with satisfaction

And then said

The most remarkable thing I have ever heard

“What can I do today to make you happy?”

And in that moment, it was already done

They are words

Only words

But sometimes . . . .

We sat in the back of the Staten Island Ferry

On a windswept starless night

You had mittens but held my hand

And leaned against my shoulder

“I always dreamed of being loved

Exactly as you love me

But I never dreamed of being in love

And I’m scared to death”

They are words

Only words

But sometimes . . . .

You received a letter

And sat at the kitchen table and cried

“My mom,” you said, showing me the envelope

“I miss her so much

But I’d miss you more if I went to see her”

They are words

Only words

But sometimes . . . .

“Why do you think I’m beautiful?

Because you love me?”

“No, you are beautiful

Because I love you”

They are words

Only words

But sometimes . . . .

“I bet you a bed warm”

You said, holding the five cards

And unable to conceal your glee

“I’ll raise you a back rub”

“I call”

“Damn!  Three queens?”

“Go, get undressed and warm

My side of the bed.  I’m sleepy”

They are words

Only words

But sometimes . . . .

It was like stepping into quicksand

Loving you

There was no avoiding it

And no escape

And it consumed

Until all that was left was love

Okay so I thought the tears that came to my eyes upon reading your other poem were due to a relation I had made with the poem and my past. I see now that this is your talent. You have a way of making a reader feel what you feel, and in such an honest way. I applaud your work, this piece especially. Your style is just lovely. Thanks for sharing!
