THE PLASTIC ROSE

THE PLASTIC ROSE

A Poem by DrD

There is a plastic rose

Somewhere in a forgotten drawer

Given to you in those early days

When you looked over

The broken fence of my life

And saw only a garden

Filled with promise blossoms.

With the rose is a note

Saying simply, I love you

And those three words

Became my biography.

Because you were my religion

And whatever is left of God

I found in you.

But I am strong enough

To handle the pain

Even though it will never mean

That I deserved it.

You were the road I chose to take

And this is what I have become

On the journey.

Now I have four walls

With yesterday inside.

And a drawer with a plastic rose

Given to you with eleven real ones

And a note, I love you . . . .

And I will love you

Until the last rose dies.

Oh DrD! That last line had me gasping. He will always, always love her! I liked the flow of this piece. The lines about the four walls with yesterday inside are so wistful. We can love again, we just create different compartments inside us to hold things in. Angi~

Wonderful , DrD. A poem to be read more than once and savored each time. Your last 2 lines are the perfect ones to express a love that, while now only one-sided, will endure forever.

Thank you for visiting me, Jacob. I always enjoy seeing you here and receiving your kind words.
A beautiful story of real love, with all of its quirks and pains - that lasts. I am reminded of O. Henry's tale "The Last Leaf"...

This poem has moved me to tears! Love is like a religion...something to believe in and something to turn to in times of strife. Now that she is gone, that note becomes even more precious. There is heartfelt emotion in every line of this one....such raw honest emotion! Poetry that is a cut above. Lydi**
