SAMUEL SOMETHING

SAMUEL SOMETHING

A Poem by DrD

Samuel Something was his given name

Simply because he wasn’t the same

As any creature they ever knew

Not the monkey, human or kangaroo

He was totally different; totally alone

In a world without peers, completely unknown

They examined him from his toe to his head

But all simply shrugged and nothing was said.

“He could be part me and maybe part you,”

Said the wise chimpanzee to the kangaroo

“Or maybe he’s a mix of everyone here,”

Said the field mouse to the curious deer

“I think it’s quite sad,” said the observant owl

Looking Samuel over with a studious scowl

“How will he find a mate or some distant kin

If there’s no one around exactly like him?”

And Samuel sighed and a tear started to fall

There was nothing to say; no, nothing at all

“I think I’m alone and I always will be

What else?  If there’s no one exactly like me?

And the rabbit sniffed away a sorrowful sob

“He won’t have a wife, not even a job!”

And lamentation fell upon all Samuel’s friends

As they pondered his fate and how it would end

Then out of the clouds the eagle was seen

Soaring in circles observing the scene

And his wings tilted slowly, fixed on the wind

As he settled above them on a thick, leafy limb

“What’s going on?” he asked, “What’s the fuss?”

“It’s Samuel,” said the crow, “He’s not quite like us.”

The eagle hummed a sound of deep thought

“You’re right,” he agreed, “but maybe we ought

To think and consider what Samuel might be”

So they squinted and poked hoping to see

The answer to why Samuel was totally unlike

Everyone else; why it was like day and night!

T'was the turtle, so the story was told to us

Who was the last to arrive as he always was

And his laughter was heard from inside his shell

As he said, “You’re all blind!  You can’t even tell

That Samuel is part of everyone here

He’s part of mankind and everything dear

He feels alone as everyone has

And doubts his tomorrows and suffers his past

He longs to be loved and needs to be heard

He needs to belong; to hear a kind word

So Samuel Something decided to be

The secrets that live inside you and me

Your poem is a wonderful fable that reminds us that we are the sum of many parts and that every one is special in their own way. It is so very entertaining with the manner in which the other creatures and birds render their opinions and then the turtle, who was the last to speak would be the one to reveal the truth of exactly who Samuel was.

David, you have said enough in the last few lines to allow all who read this to understand the basic nature of mankind and of the secrets that live within each of us!!

This would be an absolutely delightful children's book!! Have you thought of publishing it, or is it already published?

Wow.. Wonderful ..
We are; a myriad of beings
Colors of butterflies and rainbows
Sounds of silence and of noise
We are You & We are Me
Souls unseen and Hearts, that beat..
