PROLOGUE

I look all around me. I’m in a white void, left to my own devices. I look down at my clothes. I’m wearing a hospital gown and a pair of socks. The kind with the grips on the bottom so I don’t slide around the hospital floors. But I’m not in the hospital. This place doesn’t even seem to have floors. But somehow it’s cold, and I’m standing. Above me, a booming voice shouts.

“Test number 1,467 with subject 102.”

The words make me shiver, not from the cold, but from the numbers. 1,467 tests. I was the 102nd subject to go through this treatment, and I was the one who lasted the longest. Tears streamed down my face as I cried out.

“NO! NO MORE! PLEASE! I BEG OF YOU!” I fall to my knees in pain, the tears streaming into my test marks along my face and neck. Nothing changed. Nothing ever changed.
