Difference.

Difference.

A Poem by Fay Slimm
"

The poem was written a while back as tribute to the great poet Gerard Manley Hopkins - - and hope you enjoy.

"

Difference.

Praise for all variation,
that diversified play of colour and shape
which takes away sameness
and paints nature with sheer tessilation.

Hooray for the patchwork
of harlequin stripes in a mackerel sky,
ladybird's checkered backs or
blotches on coats of every dalmatian.

Applause for the hues
shot through peacocks and peppered
streaks embroidering sand,
marbling of stone, rainbow's wide bands,
spot-speckled trout, braided
tattoo-frets over zebras and tiger-faces
smeared with a motley
collection of artistically studded mosaics.

Smiles for tri-colours
in lazing cats and piebald toads made
to reflect luminous water.
For kaleidoscope difference let us savour
all crazed iridescence
caught in the great abundance of nature.

A celebration of individuality, the uniqueness of the palette of living creatures. Reminds me very much of Gerald Manley Hopkins and his Pied Beauty. A definite nod in his direction. Wonderful description and use of language. You paint with words Fay and do so with immense skill.

Different people with different cultures with different color and different languages makes the world a colorful one. Different humans, different animals and different plants. Winter, summer, autumn, rain, and dry season are one of their kind. Sweetness, bitterness and sour. Pleasure, pain and the space between them. If everything has been the same, no one will have a taste. Life would have been be too hard to travel because everyone would be traveling towards the same direction, heading for the same mission. It would have been a boredom home of no color.
We would have been the same, think the same, act the same and remain the same.
