Keep running

Keep running

A Poem by Fin Buckley
"

One day you will reach a place to call home.

"

“Let it run its ragged course,

It will soon be back.”

It sprinted off, long legs

Carrying itself

Through poorly lit forests,

Prying eyes traveling across its skin,

Through childhood homes,

Where laughter rarely filled,

Through slanted alleyways,

Where it met the embrace

Of multiple lover’s arms, leaving as quickly

As it had dove in --

It ran from time,

From fate,

From death.

It ran until its lungs were set ablaze,

Smoke pouring from its mouth

Like a broken machine,

But it was far from broken.

It ran until its coal innards

Turned to diamond, holding in

The smoke till it snuffed out

Its own flames,

A necessary process

To get better.

It ran against crowds,

Against tidal waves of

Disapproving looks

It

Ran

On.

The future waits for nothing,

So why stop and change?

Keep running.

Don’t ever turn back,

For diamonds can’t revert to coal,

And smoke can’t reproduce a flame;

Don’t waste the person you are now

Looking back on the husk you were then.

Keep running.
