Sensations and How To Lose Them

Sensations and How To Lose Them

A Poem by Fraser Murray
"

Something new, a short one but I'll be recording it either way

"
It starts as a bittersweet tingle on your tongue,
A blending of confusing sensations into one,
At the tip there is a warning, the feeling something's wrong,
But that's the part that you're ignoring at the start because you're 'strong',
Then as the weeks crawl by it changes, the sweetness starts to fade,
To be replaced by an excuse for joy you wish you'd never made,
Because it's clear that something's missing, yet you sustain the masquerade
In case you draw too much attention to those fears you never tamed,
As the bitter turns to sour, turns to sickly turns to grey,
You start to question which mistake it was that left you here this way;
Surely it must be your fault, the world can't be to blame,
Cause if it was then wouldn't everyone seem to suffer just the same?
Now this food it tastes of nothing, your skin it feels so cold
Like the king who could not eat because his touch turned all to gold,
Except that all I touch is lost and crumbles, ash I cannot hold,
It seems to mock me as it slips my grasp and turns my flesh to mould,
"This is not life" I'd like to say, if I could be so bold,
As if the life this man was destined for is a life I'll ever know,
Because the tears in all my clothes reflect this feeling in my bones,
That every choice I make is tempting me to live and die alone.
