My American Dream

My American Dream

A Poem by KamikazeCat
"

We all have our perfect life. Here's a glimpse at mine.

"
From humble beginnings, I came.
Simple life, with a heart of gold
And a dream as endless as the sky.

I am destined for greatness.
I can feel it in every inch of my soul.
It is my calling, my fire
My American Dream.

Alas anything for those who start with nothing, does not come easy.
Through hardship, loss,
Pain, agony,
Despair, hopelessness,
Tears and blood.
Self doubt that burns your throat when you yell.
And silent cries that keep you up at night.

I lay awake in the wee hours of morning
Battling my heart and mind
Do I give up? Or not?

Not a moment goes by where I do not dream
Of my life, and where it should be.

To open a mailbox, and have letters pour out with your name on them.
Opening them to find they are written by strangers congratulating me,
And giving me praise for the work I have succeeded upon.

Night falls, and I am dressed in clothes I never thought I would be able to afford.
Going for a ride in a stretched out car like a high school prom,
Only to to arrive at a theater with the entrance lined with people.
The cameras flash as the driver opens the door and let's me out.
I smile and wave, and microphones slither their way past the gate
To hear what it is that I have to say.
Question after question.
Yes. No. I can't answer that right now.
Thank you for your time.

The people cheer as I take a marker and scribble my name on a picture of my face.
They tell me how much my work means to them.
How much I inspire them to never give up.
A feeling of satisfaction washes over me.

When the night is over, I return to my home.
A lovely home, and what resides inside is what makes it such.

The door creaks like a mouse as I enter through.
I greet the seemingly empty home,
But She's there.

My wife. The love of my life. The woman of my dreams.

She wears comfortable clothes, with her long hair draping over her shoulders.
Her sparkling eyes look at me, as I place my keys on the hanger next to the door frame.
She walks over to me,
And as she wraps me in her arms our lips meet.
Such an amazing feeling it is.

A few dishes linger in the kitchen sink,
And the sound of music coming from her workshop downstairs
Echos through the house.

Heading upstairs, I too slip into clothing more suited for this environment.
Soon after, I am surprised with her presence on the bed.
She laughs at my reaction, and teases me for being so odd.
But I know she loves me.
I was her world, just as much as she was mine.

I lay my head on her chest.
She places her hand on my shoulder, and I can feel the soft silver
That is wrapped around her left ring finger on my skin.
She wears that ring because of me.
She loves me, and I do her.

I soon doze off to the sound of her heartbeat.
It was my lullaby every night.
We fall asleep in each others arms.

When morning comes, I wake up to find myself still by her side.
She sleeps longer than I, but that doesn't bother me.
Gazing out our bedroom window,
An inner peace fills me to the brim.

I know that I will get to repeat this again.
And again.
And again.
Every night until I am called into eternal slumber.

A life so perfect.
Only one with a life so damaged,
Could dare to dream of such impossibilities.
